Duke Energy DEGS Notrees

Company Summary

Description

In January 2013, we completed our 36-megawatt (MW) Notrees Battery Storage Project, America's largest battery storage project at a wind farm. Duke Energy matched a $22 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy to install large-scale batteries capable of storing electricity produced by our 153-MW Notrees wind farm in west Texas. Thanks to these batteries, the wind-generated energy can be used when it's needed most – not just when the wind is blowing. Developing an expertise in this advanced technology will help us expand the use of renewable energy, better integrate it into the power grid and become even more efficient at serving our customers. This breakthrough increases both the value and practical application of variable renewable energy sources, such as wind power, which will change the way clean, renewable energy is used – today, and in the future.
