Channel Energy Center LLC
Company Summary
Description
The Channel Energy Center is located on a 12-acre site along the Houston Ship Channel, one of the world’s largest industrial corridors. A highly efficient combined-cycle and cogeneration facility, Channel currently generates power using three combustion turbines, which are routed to three heat recovery steam generators that provide steam to one steam turbine.
The plant provides electricity and steam to its industrial host, LyondellBasell's Houston Refining L.P., under an energy services agreement. When Channel came online, LyondellBasell was able to shut down its older, less-efficient boilers, which reduced emissions.
Channel continues its march toward greater efficiency and cleaner technologies. In April 2012, the plant retrofitted its three auxiliary boilers with selective catalytic reduction systems to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions. An expansion completed in June 2014 added approximately 260 megawatts to the plant’s baseload capacity and improved its overall efficiency.
