Project: Dakota Range III Wind Farm
Firm Commitment: 151.2 MW
Project: Northern Lights 2017 Expansion Project
Firm Commitment: 19,913 Dth/d
KULM, N.D., Nov. 6, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Representatives from NextEra Energy Resources, a subsidiary of NextEra Energy (NYSE: NEE), and Xcel Energy (NYSE: XEL), today announced a joint $25,000 donation to establish a "SmartLab" technology center at Kulm Public School.
"At NextEra Energy Resources, we hope that by continuing to build on North Dakota students' robust educational foundation, they will be well-equipped to enter the job market in the strongest position possible," said Clay Cameron, project developer for NextEra Energy Resources. "Maybe one day that future will take them into the energy industry where some of the fastest growing jobs in the U.S. can be found."
NextEra Energy Resources and Xcel Energy have each committed $12,500 in school funding, which will be used to secure computer lab equipment and expand the school science, technology, energy, arts and math (STEAM) curriculum. The result of the investment will be the creation of the Kulm Public School K-12 SmartLab which will be installed at the school in the spring. The new SmartLab will offer an expanded curriculum in eight core technological competencies, including: energy, scientific data and analysis, and software engineering, among others.
"We're committed to the economic growth and future of the communities in which we operate," said Mark Nisbet, principal manager, Xcel Energy-North Dakota. "And we're especially delighted to be able to spur students' interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics careers through this grant from the Xcel Energy Foundation."
Kulm Public School is home to approximately 140 K-12 students and currently competes in state-level STEAM events. At last year's state Science Olympiad competition, a Kulm 7th grade team won first place in the alternative energy category for their construction of a wind turbine.
"Thanks to the generous donation of NextEra Energy Resources and Xcel Energy, Kulm Public School will be able to continue to achieve academic excellence in our STEAM programs," said Tami Kramlich, Kulm Public School superintendent. "It can be a challenge for rural schools to compete for resources with high-population school districts making this gift all the more impactful."

MINNEAPOLIS, March 8, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Mortenson, a leading renewable energy contractor, has been selected to build what will be the largest single-phase wind farm ever built in North America. The 600-megawatt Rush Creek Wind Project, owned and operated by Xcel Energy, will be home to 300 turbines and an 83-mile transmission line near Limon, Colo.
"We are pleased to be selected to construct this significant project for Xcel Energy and the state of Colorado. This project is another great example of Xcel's commitment to clean renewable energy." said Tim Maag, vice president and general manager at Mortenson's Wind Energy Group.
Mortenson's Wind Energy, High Voltage Transmission and Civil groups will deliver full engineering, procurement and construction for Rush Creek. Colorado based turbine manufacturer, Vestas, will provide the 300-V110 2.0MW wind turbines. The engineering design will complete April 2017, with construction expected to begin May 2017 and an in-service date of October 2018.
The 600-MW Rush Creek Wind Project will be the single largest wind contract executed to date for Mortenson, as well as the largest for the state of Colorado.
"Mortenson has a long and distinguished history with the construction of major projects in Colorado, from the Stapleton Redevelopment to Denver International Airport hotel and transit center, to the Alamosa Solar Project. In addition, it has extensive experience in the development of wind projects throughout the U.S.," said Gerald Kelly, Xcel Energy Project manager. "Mortenson also shares Xcel Energy's commitment to providing a safe and healthy work environment. We look forward to working with Mortenson on our Rush Creek Wind Farm effort."
The wind farm is estimated to contribute 350 jobs to the state during the peak of construction, and when complete will increase Colorado's wind energy production by more than 20 percent and potentially generate $180 million in landowner lease payments and property tax revenue.

SAN JOSE, Calif. and DENVER, Dec. 23, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Xcel Energy (NYSE: XEL) and SunPower Corp. (NASDAQ: SPWR) announced today the commercial operation of the 50-megawatt Hooper solar photovoltaic (PV) power plant in Colorado's San Luis Valley. Xcel Energy is purchasing the power generated by the plant at cost-competitive rates under a power purchase agreement with SunPower. The utility estimates that the plant is generating enough electricity to serve the needs of approximately 13,500 average Colorado homes.
"This expansion of our renewable portfolio in Colorado is yet another example of how Xcel Energy brings solar power to its customers," said David Eves, president of Public Service Co. of Colorado, an Xcel Energy company. "We are adding large scale solar that competes with and surpasses other forms of generation alternatives, in terms of price, over the life of the project. This benefits all of our customers - both environmentally and economically."
SunPower designed and constructed the plant, and is now operating and maintaining it onsite, and monitoring power production from the company's remote operations control center in Austin, Tex. More than 150 jobs were created at the project site during peak construction.
"Xcel Energy is providing leadership in the promotion of large scale solar power development, and demonstrating how renewable technologies are part of the solution to ensure the health of our economy and our environment," said Jorg Heinemann, SunPower executive vice president, global power plants, customer operations and EPC. "SunPower's high-efficiency solar PV technology is competitively-priced for power plant applications, fast to install, and reliably delivers clean power, particularly during peak demand hours."
At the 320-acre site, SunPower installed a SunPower® Oasis® Power Plant system. Oasis is a fully integrated, modular solar power block that is engineered to rapidly and cost-effectively deploy utility-scale solar projects while optimizing land use. The technology includes SunPower's proprietary robotic solar panel cleaning capability that uses 75 percent less water than traditional cleaning methods and can help improve system performance by up to 15 percent.
SunPower constructed two other solar power plants in the San Luis Valley that are also generating power for Xcel Energy's Colorado customers. The 19-megawatt Greater Sandhill plant has been operating since 2010, and the 30-megawatt San Luis Valley Solar Ranch began delivering energy in 2011.
The capacity of power plants in this release is described in approximate megawatts on an alternating current (ac) basis.
